In an era when sustainable farmers struggle to survive, money spent at your local market helps keep small farms alive. This ongoing series highlights goodies I’ve found at my local market in South Pasadena. So far, I’ve higlighted the Safari Sunset Flower, Romanesco Broccoli, and Blue Oyster Mushroom. When small farms have to meet the demands of larger retailers, they have less negotiation power around pricing, their produce gets thrown out for not being ‘perfect’, and some farms must use pesticides to maintain higher yields. Shopping small helps farmers maintain a freedom of choice around food decisions and cuts down on carbon emissions from food transportation as well.
