This ongoing series highlights produce from my local market in South Pasadena, sparking conversations around sustainability. When small farms have to meet the demands of larger retailers, their produce gets thrown out for not being ‘perfect’, they have less negotiation power with pricing, and some farms must use pesticides to maintain higher yields. Shopping small helps farmers maintain a freedom of choice around food decisions, and cuts down on carbon emissions from food transportation as well. So far, I’ve higlighted the Safari Sunset Flower, Romanesco Broccoli, and Blue Oyster Mushroom.
